What is a Sleep Disorder?

There are over 80 sleep and sleep-related disorders that can affect our health, performance and quality of life. Some of the more common disorders include:

  • Insomnia- trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Hypersomnolence- Excessive daytime sleepiness/trouble staying awake
  • Sleep walking and sleep talking
  • Sleep apnea- irregular breathing or breathing that stops at times while you’re sleeping
  • Restless Leg Syndrome- unpleasant tingling and creeping feelings in legs during inactivity with an irresistable urge to move
  • Periodic Limb Movement Disorder- repetitive movements in sleep, most typically in lower limbs
  • Narcolepsy- a chronic neurological disorder characterizedby excessive daytime sleepiness; also may include sudden loss of muscle tone in response to strong emotion

Some Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Disorders:
  • Irritability
  • Forgetfulness (due to poor-quality sleep)
  • Being overly tired
  • Choking spells, loud snoring, or leg jerking (sleep apnea symptoms)

Why is Sleep So Important?

Not getting enough sleep, or not getting the right kind of sleep, can affect your health, job performance, and relationships. It can even lead to accidents that cause injury or death. Sleep apnea can increase your risk of heart attack by as much as 23 times!

What is a Sleep Test?

You sleep in a comfortable private bedroom in our sleep lab. A trained technologist monitors you from a separate room throughout the night (or daytime if that’s when you sleep). The monitors record:

  • Your breathing rate
  • Oxygen levels
  • EKG (heartbeat)
  • EEG (brain waves)
  • Movements of your eyes, chin, and legs

A doctor who specializes in sleep medicine will study your test results and talk with you about treatment.
