What is Diabetes?
A hormone called insulin helps drive the sugar we eat out of the bloodstream and into the cells where it can be used. Diabetes prevents or reduces the amount of insulin the body makes, causing a harmful build-up of sugar in the bloodstream.
What are the Warning Signs?
- Extreme thirst
- Frequent urination
- Recurring bladder, skin, or gum infections
- Sores that won’t heal
- Unusually drowsy or tired
- Always hungry (especially after eating)
- Occasional blurry vision
- Unexplained weight loss
- Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
- Sexual dysfunction
Risk Factors for Diabetes Include:
- Being overweight or obese
- Lack of activity
- 40 years of age or older
- Family history of diabetes
- Women who have given birth to babies weighing more than 9 pounds
- Women who have had Gestational Diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)
