Your physician has requested that you have a MUGA (Multiple Gated Acquisition) heart examination. This is a safe, simple, non-invasive way to evaluate how well your heart muscle contracts and expands while you rest. There are no dietary restrictions either before or after this examination.

The test does require you to receive an injection. A small amount of blood will be drawn and mixed with a radioactive tracer called Technetium. After approximately 25 minutes of mixing, you will be reinjected with the radioactive tracer tagged to your blood. The injection will not make you feel hot or cold, dizzy or nauseated. The amount of radioactivity associated with this injection is negligible.

Approximate exam time 1 hour.

To outline our requirements, you will:

1. After registration report to Medical Imaging and check in.
2. You will then be escorted to Nuclear Medicine
3. A short history will be taken
4. The technologist will start an I.V.
5. Approximately 3 cc’s of blood will be withdrawn
6. The blood will be incubated with a radioactive isotope called Technetium for approximately 25 minutes.
7. After the incubation process is complete you will be taken to an imaging room.
8. You will be asked to lay flat on your back on the imaging table
9. The imaging camera will be position over your chest
10. You will receive a second injection witch contains your blood tagged to a radioactive isotope called Technetium.
11. Approximately 20 minutes of images will be taken.
12. When the images are complete you may leave.
13. A Radiologist will read your test and the results will be sent to the ordering physician.

Note: Inpatients will be transported to Nuclear Medicine for this test.
